American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are front-and-center at Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley’s press conferences and other around the state as government officials report on the latest COVID-19 developments.Jay Gates, an experienced Deaf Interpreter, delivered important news to thousands of deaf or hard-of-hearing people in the Greater Cincinnati region at Mayor John Cranley’s March 17 press conference. Gates is perhaps the most visible of a team of ASL interpreters in Cincinnati who are stepping up for this public health crisis. Others, like Marla Berkowitz in Columbus, are aiding the efforts of Gov. Mike DeWine and other Ohio officials.
