Hallie Quinn Brown (1850-1949) was born to former slaves in Pittsburgh, PA, and graduated from Wilberforce University near Dayton in 1873. She later studied elocution and oratory in Chautauqua, NY, and Boston, returning to Dayton to teach. Brown is the author of two elocution books and a social activist who lectured throughout the world, promoting the civil and linguistic rights of others.
